Roger Canals Vilageliu

Roger Canals is a doctor in Anthropology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris (2008) and the University of Barcelona. A specialist in Afro-American cults and visual anthropology, he has conducted field work in Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Catalonia. He has focussed a major part of his research on analysing the cult to María Lionza in Venezuela and Barcelona. He is author of numerous articles and book chapters as well as the book A Goddess in Motion. Visual Creativity in the Cult of María Lionza (Berghahn Books, 2017). Roger Canals is likewise an ethnographic film director. His works include Rostros de una divinidad venezolana (CNRS, 2007) and A Goddess in Motion (The Wenner-Gren Foundation, 2016). He has been a guest researcher at the University of Manchester, the EHESS in Paris and the Institute of Caribbean Studies (Puerto Rico).

Roger Canals oversees the coordination and audiovisual orientation of the MEDIOS project. He offers visual consultancy to the project researchers as well as managing the website.
